Face on Mars

The so-called ‘Face on Mars' and other related unusual features in the Cydonia region of Mars have captured the eager imagination and interest of scientists and the general public alike and have been embroiled in ongoing, heated controversy ever since the original Mars Viking images were taken.

A Testable Hypothesis

My position on these various Mars anomalies has always been–and remains to this day–that the ‘artificiality' of these structures is a testable hypothesis, namely, that they are ‘man'-made, i.e., created by intelligent, sentient creatures. If they are not, then they most assuredly are naturally formed features. The nice thing about these features, I believed, is that one way or another, we would eventually be able to test this hypothesis and ultimately learn the truth of these matters once we could get better, more highly resolved images. Thus, unlike a myriad of other scientific and new-age tainted subjects, where much wishful thinking runs rampant, the truth about the Face on Mars was soon to be within our grasp!

Egg on the Face of Mars?

Unfortunately, although we have recently obtained the eagerly awaited new images via the Mars Global Surveyor, the matter remains a not-so-simple one. At a superficial first glance–on the surface of things (pardon the pun)–the controversy is apparently not yet so easily resolved, and the hypothesis is not so easily tested as we would like it to be. There has not yet been any decisive or compelling analysis or demonstration that would put the matter to rest once and for all. In fact, the reaction of many has been somewhat muted, if not negative, that the latest images of the face do not appear to support the notion of artificiality. And my personal initial reaction was that there may very well likely be ‘egg on the face of Mars'!

But Is There Really?

Recently I have come across a ‘process' or ‘analysis' of the face on Mars, which is suggestive, if not supportive, of artificiality. The nice thing about this procedure is that anyone with a modest knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and related plug-ins can replicate this him/herself! And, after all, this is what science is all about–replication. I present this analysis to you, therefore, in that it might encourage others to continue the exploration.

About Face!

Our analyses consist of basically two parts: 1) the face on Earth, and 2) the face on Mars. Having already completed the procedure on the face on Mars, we decided that it would be illustrative and helpful to do the same procedure–as an example of the process–on the face of an Earthling, initially, namely ME! (We hope to replicate this procedure soon on a number of additional human subjects. So, if you are bold and adventurous enough to go where no human face has gone before–aside from mine, of course–then please let me know, and we will arrange to get from you, perhaps, a digital photo of your own face to process. Or please feel free to conduct your own procedure).

Please note: Our results, namely, our specific images, are copyrighted and may not be reproduced without my specific written permission. However, you are free to replicate our process–and we encourage you to do so–and are free to distribute the results of your own work in any way you please (we hope, responsibly).

I recommend that you first view the results of the various steps of our procedure on the ‘Face on Earth' and then look at the results of our analysis of the recently newly imaged ‘Face on Mars'.
