The Venezuelan jungle just would not let up. The ugly, hot and sultry mood of the swamp let itself be known in no uncertain terms, ‘Let up your guard and die!' Every step you felt instinctively would be your last. Yet you survived and moved on. Each succeeding step left you with the distinct feeling that you were more and more being sucked further down into the muck. You recalled how it was so much akin to the whiteout you experienced in your last visit to the North Pole. How long would this go on? The sun was hot. The sweat coursed down your brow, burning your eyes into momentary blindness. This surely could not be? This was pure folly. If the swamp didn't swallow you up– if the crocodiles or snakes didn't get you–if the man-eating plants didn't snare your legs with their ubiquitous creeping vines–if you didn't wind up with a poison-tipped arrow in your back–then the malaria infested mosquitos most assuredly would get you! There was no escaping!
