J oin me on escorted trips which may arise from time to time to various parts of the globe. These may be African safaris, other special interest tours or possibly even unbelievable journeys that are not to be missed. They may be big-ticket items or extraordinary travel offerings at fantastic prices. Stay tuned and visit back often.

ESCORTED AFRICAN SAFARI!

D o you yearn to go on that once in a lifetime African safari? Or are you already no stranger to Africa, having gone there at least once before? Either way, why not join me on an escorted African Safari!

W e went to Africa in September for three weeks, cutting a swath across southern Africa from Namibia, to Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Kenya. We went on morning and evening game drives and stayed deep in the bush in luxury tented camps. This was a custom-designed safari–not a package. We plan such trips from time to time and welcome those brave enough to join us for adventure. A photo gallery of the last safari will be available here soon. If you'd be interested in joining us on future safaris just email Michael .

Adventure Clubs You Can Join!

cattered around the world are travel and adventure clubs that you can join. No, these are not stodgy cigar-smoked dens full of tired and weathered old folks slowly spinning long drawn out, boring yarns of memories (along with much faded photos) of times long past and mostly forgotten, to anyone patient and willing enough to listen! Rather, these are the growing memberships of people spanning the globe across national borders–intensely interesting people of all ages and walks of life who share a singular, all-consuming, simple passion, namely, that of travel and adventure. These people are none other than you and me!

joined three of these clubs because they give me increasing opportunities to meet and interact with like-minded people whose love of travel and adventure–indeed, of lands and peoples everywhere–equals or even exceeds my own! A few clubs are listed here along with some of the qualifications for membership. Contact them if you are interested in joining. And, if you're a member of another club, please let me know.

Travelers' Century Club

"World travel…the passport to peace through understanding." is the motto of the Club.

" f there is left in the world any hope whatsoever that man can live in peace, despite the terrible weapons they have created to destroy each other, that hope lies in a better understanding among peoples. Understanding isn't possible without extensive personal contacts. Personal contact can only be made by traveling. "–E.C. Daniels, Asst Managing Editor of the New York Times

embership in the Travelers' Century Club is limited to those who have visited 100 or more countries of the world–as they appear in the ‘Approved List of Countries'. "... it was decided that even the shortest visits would suffice -– even if only a port-of-call, or plane fuel stop." If you contact the Club, they'll be happy to send you this list as well as an application.

finally qualified to join the Club in 1996 the very moment I stepped off the boat in Columbia -– country #100! on my list–having just crossed the Orinoco River from the Venezuelan side (see " The Temple of Doom and the Circles of Sand ").

Michael's countries visited so far (as of September 30, 2003): 125

Circumnavigators Club

o qualify for membership in the Circumnavigators Club you must have made a complete circumnavigation of the globe in one continuous journey. This means that you could theoretically do this by simply walking around the North Pole! But most people qualify by circling the globe in a more conventional manner.

qualified to join the Club by going around the world in the summer of 1972. In June, I flew from Honolulu to Tokyo, went by ship from Yokohama to Nahodka (near Vladivostok). Then I took the Transiberian Railway to Moscow, flew to Sochi on the Black Sea, continued by rail to and through Turkey to Istanbul, continued further by train to Athens, Barcelona, Amsterdam and finally on to London, where I then flew to Honolulu by the end of August.

The Adventurers' Club of Honolulu

" he original club was formed in New York City in 1912. Those attending were 34 men–soldiers, sailors, hunters, explorers, journalists, authors and scientists. Four toasts were offered that evening, and as each successive club formed, these toasts have become part of an ongoing ritual":

" To adventure, the shadow of every red-blooded man [and woman]
To the game.
To every lost trail, lost cause and lost comrade.
To Lady and gentlemen adventurers.
"

he objectives of the Honolulu club, ine particular, are: to promote adventure; knowledge of the sciences, arts, and humanities; good fellowship, friendship and cooperation among people who have left the beaten paths and sought knowledge and adventure.

If you live in or travel often to Hawaii and might want to become a member, contact Michael.

The Explorers Club Limited

Explorers Club Limited
nd finally, I am a member of The Explorers Club Limited, founded by my brother-in-law, Ed. The motto of his club is "Totos Por Uno - Uno Por Totos" At least this is what his emblem on his letter-head says. I have a membership card for one year. I don't know if I will be renewed or not. Depends on how we get along, I guess. Frankly, I don't know how or why I became a member–I discovered one day that I was a member–Ed sent me a membership card with my name on it!

honestly don't know what the qualifications are for membership. I don't know either, if Ed even wants any more members! And, finally, I don't how many members his club has. Well, at least I know this–there are at least three members: Ed, his wife (my sister), and me! But Ed is an adventurous guy. He deserves to create and have his own explorers club if he likes. And I am envious of Ed's great jeans jacket with emblems sown on all over from all of his travels! Go ahead, why don't YOU form your own adventurers' club! Go ahead, do like Ed did!
